Renewable hydrogen and chemical industry have broad prospects

     At the "15th Five-Year Plan" development ideas seminar for the petrochemical and chemical industries held in Beijing recently, China Hydrogen Energy Alliance Research Institute released the "Renewable Hydrogen 100" Chemical Report-Hydrogen Energy Supporting Decarbonization Outlook of Key Chemical Scenarios "(hereinafter referred to as the" Report ") pointed out that promoting the coupled development of renewable hydrogen and the chemical industry has broad prospects and is of positive significance for key chemical industries to achieve the" double carbon "goal.

The "Report" combines the maturity of industrial technology and engineering application progress to estimate three time periods for the industry to implement transformation and development: before 2030, the transformation and cultivation period, green chemical industry will shift from preliminary exploration to large-scale demonstration, the cost of renewable hydrogen will move towards parity, and the chemical industry has become China's largest renewable hydrogen demand market; 2030-2040 is a coupled development period. Renewable hydrogen promotes deep coupling between the chemical and energy fields. Energy and chemical infrastructure gradually covers all green chemical technology paths, and explores diversified, multi-field coupled and networked development; 2040-2060 is a comprehensive development period. The hydrogen-based fuel trade market provides space for green transformation of chemical industry. The installed capacity of renewable hydrogen electrolysis cells in China reaches 500 - 750 GW. Renewable hydrogen is more economical than industrial by-product hydrogen and fossil energy hydrogen production. It can support the green and low-carbon transformation of the entire chemical industry.

The "Report" also pointed out that at present, renewable hydrogen still has problems such as the contradiction between production capacity fluctuations and the process requirements of the chemical industry, the difference between economics and the cost requirements of the chemical industry, and the temporary inability of production scale to meet the needs of the chemical industry. To realize the coupling of the chemical industry and renewable hydrogen in the future, first, we must reasonably select development models according to local conditions, lay out green chemical product preparation and storage and transportation projects through local integrated layout and cross-regional energy resource planning, and create an industrial transformation economy with regional characteristics; Second, we must scientifically carry out technological innovation at the hydrogen supply, storage and transportation ends and application ends, especially strengthen green chemical process technological research at the application end; The third is to establish unified market support, coordinate and judge the production and consumption situation in various sub-sectors of the chemical industry, fully build the electricity, hydrogen and carbon certification system, improve the construction of standards and public service systems, and establish a phased and sub-regional transformation plan.
