The series of reports on the economic and social development achievements of New China in the past 75 years released by the National Bureau of Statistics on the 19th shows that over the past 75 years, China has made remarkable achievements in energy development, its supply guarantee capabilities have continued to increase, the green and low-carbon transformation has been further advanced, energy utilization efficiency has been continuously improved, and energy conservation and consumption reduction have achieved remarkable results.

Since the founding of New China, energy production capacity and level have been greatly improved, and China has become the world's largest energy producer. In 2023, the total primary energy production will reach 4.83 billion tons of standard coal, an increase of 202.6 times compared with 1949, with an average annual growth rate of 7.4%. Today, China has basically built a multi-wheel drive energy production and supply guarantee system for coal, oil, gas, nuclear and renewable energy, and its energy security level and resilience continue to improve.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China's energy production has undergone tremendous changes. The driving force for development has accelerated from traditional energy to new energy, and the structure has accelerated from coal-based to diversified and clean. In 2023, the proportion of raw coal in total primary energy production will drop to 66.6%; the proportion of crude oil will drop to 6.2%; the development of clean energy such as natural gas, hydropower, nuclear power, and new energy will accelerate, and the proportion will significantly increase to 27.2%.

The report shows that over the past 75 years, China's overall energy consumption has shown a steady growth trend. In 1953, China's total energy consumption was only 50 million tons of standard coal, and in 2023 it reached 5.72 billion tons of standard coal, an increase of 104.7 times compared with 1953, with an average annual growth rate of 6.9%. In terms of varieties, clean energy consumption is growing faster. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China has further promoted the energy consumption revolution and accelerated the pace of green and low-carbon energy transformation. The growth of clean energy consumption such as natural gas, hydropower, nuclear power, and new energy has accelerated, and its proportion in total energy consumption has increased from 14.5% in 2012 to 26.4% in 2023.

Energy utilization efficiency has been greatly improved, and energy conservation and consumption reduction have achieved remarkable results. Over the past 75 years, China has continuously strengthened the development of energy resources and infrastructure construction, implemented an energy development strategy that combines conservation and development and puts conservation first, and paid more attention to the quality and efficiency of energy development. The overall energy consumption per unit of GDP has shown a downward trend. Since the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", it has dropped by 43.8%, with an average annual decline of 3.1%. Energy consumption per unit of product has been significantly reduced. Source: Xinhuanet
