Recently, Abang Zohari, Chief Minister of Sarawak, Malaysia, announced plans to export 240,000 tons of hydrogen to Japan and South Korea by 2028.

Abang pointed out that hydrogen energy will indirectly make the state a major power generation center and increase the state's GDP in China through a hydrogen sales tax. "Exporting hydrogen will allow us to collect sales taxes and increase revenue in Sarawak, while making Sarawak a major producer of clean and sustainable energy," Abang said.

Sarawak currently has two large-scale hydrogen production projects, H2biscus and H2ornbill, implemented in the Bintulu Industrial Zone and scheduled to be put into operation in 2027. H2biscus is a green hydrogen and green ammonia plant. The H2ornbill plant uses hydropower to produce hydrogen, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, convert it into transportation-efficient methylcyclohexane, and then ship it by sea to demand areas outside Malaysia. Sumitomo Corporation of Japan and Yinshi cooperated to participate in the implementation of the H2ornbill project.
