Recently, the European Plastics Industry Association stated that data provided to the organization by the Nova Institute, the world's top independent research institution in biotechnology-related fields, shows that in 2022, global bio-based plastic production will total 1.9 million tons, of which the EU bio-based plastic production will be 400,000 tons.
Detailed data shows that in 2022, biobased epoxy resins accounted for 27% of global biobased plastic production; followed by biobased polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA), each accounting for 16%. Bio-based polyamides account for 9% of global bio-based plastic production. In the EU, in 2022, bio-polypropylene (PP) will account for 24% of EU bioplastics production; followed by bio-polyethylene and "starch-containing polymer composites", each accounting for 18%. Polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) accounted for 15% of EU bio-based plastic production last year, and biobased epoxy resins accounted for 9%.
The association said: "Monitoring the progress of the plastics industry's transition to recycling and climate neutrality is crucial to the European plastics industry. Our new collaboration with Nova Institute aims to provide applicable production data for biobased plastics." Nova The Institute covers plastic products including agriculture and gardening, automobiles and transportation, construction and construction, consumer goods, electronics and packaging. However, the European Plastics Industry Association's data does not include the application share of fibers, coatings, adhesives, sealants and rubber. Bioplastics production data published by European Bioplastics also do not include data on cellulose acetate, EPDM and polyurethane.
