Lotus Resumes Sulfuric Acid Production in Malawi
Lotus Resources announced on August 12 that sulfuric acid production and uranium processing have resumed at its Kayelekera uranium mine. The acid plant and processing plant were shut down in June because of “a disruption to third-party acid supply and delays in acid plant commissioning caused by partial refractory brick failure in the sulfur furnace.” Managing Director Greg Bittar said the acid plant site has sufficient sulfur inventory, with supply visibility through the remainder of 2026. He added that this is a key strategic project for Kayelekera and “will improve acid supply security and significantly reduce reagent costs.”
It is understood that the sulfur burner can produce about 73,000 tonnes/year of sulfuric acid and requires about 24,000 tonnes/year of sulfur at full operating load.
