Argentina’s Profertil Urea Output Rises 16% in the First Half

According to 90% shareholder Adecoagro, Argentina’s Profertil increased urea output by 16% from January to June this year to 617,000 tonnes. The plant produced 340,000 tonnes of urea in the second quarter, up from 279,000 tonnes in the same period last year. Adecoagro used last year’s figures for pro forma analysis, comparing them with the period before it acquired a controlling stake in the Bahia Blanca plant in mid-December 2025. Adecoagro said in its earnings report that the increase was due to more operating days, as the plant was shut for 31 days in the first half of last year. The shutdown was mainly caused by flooding that affected gas supply to the facility. Profertil sold 404,000 tonnes of urea in the first six months, down from 433,000 tonnes a year earlier. Urea revenue from January to June reached 250 million USD, up 30% from 192 million USD in the same period last year, after urea prices surged in line with international levels following the outbreak of the Iran war in late February and restrictions on Middle East exports. The Profertil plant has annual capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of granular urea and is the only urea facility in the country. But Pampa Energia plans to build a competing urea facility with annual capacity of 2.1 million tonnes in Bahia Blanca in about 40 months.
