The project, the first US phosphate plant in 42 years, underscores a push for agricultural self-sufficiency. Construction is expected to take 24 months upon regulatory approvals.
CHS and OCP Launch Project to Produce Phosphate Fertilizers in the United States
Moroccan phosphate producer OCP will partner with US agribusiness CHS to build a new plant in Waggaman, Louisiana, with annual production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of phosphate fertilizers. The USD 450 million phosphate fertilizer production facility will be built at Cornerstone Energy Park, adjacent to CF Industries' Waggaman ammonia production facility. Ammonia is a key input in converting phosphate rock into fertilizers.
The announcement comes only months after President Trump announced a suspension of countervailing duties on OCP phosphate imports in an effort to ease rising fertilizer costs for domestic growers. The plant will be the first phosphate fertilizer production facility built in the United States in 42 years, although a construction timetable has not yet been announced. Once all project-related and financing approvals are finalized, construction is expected to take approximately 24 months.
According to OCP, the facility is expected to produce commonly used phosphate fertilizers, including DAP and MAP. The project will also include storage for raw materials and finished products, as well as tanks for merchant-grade phosphoric acid.
